Elevators (also known as luxators) are dental extraction devices. They can be used to loosen teeth before a forceps extraction, to remove roots or impacted teeth, when teeth are compromised and at risk of breakage, or when teeth are malpositioned and can’t be reached with forceps.
Elevators are divided into three categories. Straight elevators, such as Coupland’s or Warwick James’, are used for wedging and feature one concave and one convex aspect to the tip. Cryer’s or Winter’s triangular elevators feature a lateral point and are used to deliver class I leverage.
These can deliver significant forces and risk jaw fracture, especially when paired with a T-bar. Root tips are engaged with pick elevators.
