What Causes Wisdom Tooth Pain-Treatment And Prevention

Wisdom Tooth

Wisdom teeth can be very painful for some people, while others only experience pain and discomfort when touching the area or chewing food. It is advisable by best dentists that it is better to remove the wisdom teeth before the pain becomes an issue.

Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth?

Our teeth arrive in an orderly fashion, with the molars appearing last. Usually, our first set of molars appears around age 6, and the second set appears around age 12. The last set, which is known as the wisdom teeth, takes much longer than all our other teeth, and about 1 in 5 adults never gets them. Our ancestry plays a role in this. Indigenous Mexicans get the wisdom teeth almost always, while Tasmanian natives rarely have wisdom teeth.

Although this has changed with time, scientists think that the change is due to the way we eat. Back in the days of our ancient ancestors, humans lived on lots of foods that require intensive chewing. Foods like nuts, raw and half-cooked meat, roots, leaves were a big part of their lives. These days most of our meals are quite softer, and we have knives and forks to do a big part of chewing for us. From that time to now, we’ve simply outgrown our need for wisdom teeth, but that has not stopped them.

These are various symptoms that one may experience while having pain related to wisdom teeth:

  • One may feel wisdom teeth pain at the back of the mouth, behind the molars.

  • The area might also be red, inflamed and soft to touch.
  • Sometimes one can even experience swelling in that area.
  • Some people may not even have any visible symptoms of wisdom teeth pain.

This is not necessary that if one is experiencing oral pain, it is due to wisdom teeth. Oral pain can also have several other, broken or damaged filling, fracture or abscess, gum infection and many other such reasons. It is better to see the dentist once and know what the reason behind it is.

Home Remedies For Wisdom Teeth Pain

Here are some home remedies one can do for wisdom tooth pain until their dentist appointment:

  • Apply ice to the affected area to help numb the pain and reduce swelling.
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers can help temporarily ease the discomfort.
  • Prepare a mixture of about eight ounces of water with two teaspoons of salt, and then gargle with it to clean the mouth and help remove food particles and bacteria that could be causing a painful infection.

Wisdom teeth removal surgery is not an option for some people due to potential risk or complications such as bleeding disorders, or some other cause. In these cases, the dentist may recommend some other options, such as those mentioned above. In such instances in which wisdom tooth extraction is not an option, the dentist may also prescribe a special mouth rinse that will clean the mouth after meals and kill bacteria in the mouth that could cause infection.

Wisdom Tooth Pain Relief

While the remedies mentioned above can lessen the pain for some time, but all this is temporary. The only permanent solution will likely be to extract the wisdom teeth. This procedure has become relatively common, and the dentist or oral surgeon will be able to explain the possible risks and potential benefits involved in the whole procedure.
